What QSR Operators Get Wrong About Drive-Thru Technology During a New Build or Remodel

The technology decisions made during a new QSR build or a major remodel are harder to fix than almost any other decision in the project. When the ceiling is closed and the parking lot is poured, the cabling that is in the wall is the cabling that stays in the wall. When the drive-thru lane is done, the speaker post location is the speaker post location. Getting it right during the build is significantly cheaper than correcting it afterward. 

Most technology failures on new build opening days and in the first months of a remodel trace back to decisions made during construction, not to the technology itself. Here is what those decisions look like and how to avoid the most common ones.

The Sequencing Problem  

New restaurant construction runs on a tight timeline with a large number of contractors working in parallel. Electricians, HVAC, general contractors, health inspectors, and equipment vendors all have interdependencies that create specific sequencing requirements. Technology installations sit inside that complexity in a way that is easy to get wrong. 

Structured cabling needs to go into the walls before the walls close. Drive-thru cabling and conduit need to be in the ground before the parking lot is poured. Camera conduit needs to be placed before the ceiling is finished. These are not flexible deadlines, they are construction sequence dependencies that, if missed, turn into expensive after-the-fact remediation. 

The operators who handle this well engage their technology partner early, before the general contractor sets the construction schedule, so technology sequencing requirements are built into the schedule rather than accommodated around it. The ones who struggle engage their technology partner after the schedule is set and then spend the rest of the project trying to catch up. 

Vendor Fragmentation During the Build 

Most QSR operators manage new store technology by coordinating multiple vendors: one for the drive-thru system, one for cameras, one for the network, one for POS, one for menu boards. Each vendor shows up, installs their piece, and leaves. Nobody tests the full stack together before opening day. Nobody owns the result when the POS is not talking to the kitchen display and the drive-thru timer is not reflecting actual order status. 

Vendor fragmentation creates two specific problems during a build. The first is coordination failure, when the cabling contractor finishes before the camera vendor arrives, and the runs that were put in do not match where the cameras actually need to go. The second is commissioning failure, when each system is tested in isolation but nobody runs an end-to-end test under conditions that simulate opening day volume before the doors open.

The Cabling Gap That Shows Up After Opening 

Structured cabling that passes a basic continuity test can still fail at gigabit speeds under load. A Cat6 run that was terminated incorrectly in a wall behind drywall causes an intermittent POS outage that takes three service calls and two weeks to diagnose. A PoE run to a camera that was pulled too tight around a conduit bend loses connectivity when the building temperature changes. These are not rare failures. They are the most common source of post-opening technology problems on new builds.

Operators who use a general contractor or a low-bid cabling company often find out what was missed during the first week of operation. 

Drive-Thru Infrastructure Decisions That Cannot Be Undone 

The speaker post location is the most consequential technology decision in a drive-thru build, and it is often made by the general contractor based on the floor plan rather than by someone who understands how drive-thru audio works under real operating conditions. A speaker post that is positioned where the floor plan shows an order point, without accounting for lane stacking, adjacent traffic noise, or the vehicle height profile of the cars that will use it, is a speaker post that will require a workaround for the life of the location. 

Drive-thru lane sensor placement, pre-sell board positioning, and conduit routing for the timer system are similarly difficult to change after the parking lot is finished. Each of these should be reviewed by the technology partner before the layout is finalized, not after the concrete is dry. 

The Commissioning Step That Gets Skipped 

A system that was installed correctly still needs to be commissioned. Commissioning is not a walkthrough. It is a full-stack test under conditions that simulate opening day volume: the POS talking to the kitchen display, the drive-thru timer reflecting actual order status, the cameras recording at the correct resolution to the NVR configured with the correct retention settings, the menu boards displaying the right content in the correct daypart, and the network handling the full load of every connected system simultaneously. 

The commissioning step is the one most likely to be abbreviated when the opening deadline is close and the contractor is eager to close out the punch list. The operators who skip it find out during their first rush. The operators who insist on it find out in the parking lot before the restaurant opens. 

What to Do Differently 

Engage your technology partner before the general contractor sets the construction schedule. Give them the floor plan at the stage when input can still change the layout, not after the layout is locked. Confirm that structured cabling will be installed and certified by someone accountable for its performance, not just its continuity. Run a full commissioning test before opening day, under load, and document every system's configuration settings so the next technician who touches anything knows exactly what they are working with.

In most cases, it is not discovered until the system running on it is under load. A cabling problem that does not show up during a basic continuity check can cause intermittent failures in the POS, camera system, or drive-thru equipment that are extremely time-consuming to diagnose and require opening walls to correct.
